Location: Winterthur Switzerland and Palermo, Sicily (Italy)

Contract Duration: 3-6 months

TOELT is seeking as soon as possible a data scientist (80% - 100%) intern to join our research and development department for the research involved in an ongoing EU-funded research project focusing on smart agriculture. The motivated and curious candidate will be working in making significant progress in machine learning by developing new algorithms in close contact with the application experts of the University of Palermo. For this reason the interested person will be working at the University of Palermo, in close contact with agronomists, analyzing existing data, planning the collection of further data and developing new machine learning sensing strategies to face the challenges of the current changing environment.

The candidate in this role is expected to have some research experience in research areas such as machine learning and computational statistics. Experience in deep learning and computer vision would be advantageous. The ideal candidate will also have a keen interest in producing new science, a flair for mathematics and a strong motivation to turn research into usable and impactful applications.

About TOELT

TOELT is an innovative company based in Switzerland that does cutting edge research in the field of machine learning (and especially deep learning). We participate in large international research projects in various fields: medicine, smart agriculture, satellite imaging, thermal imaging of facial features, and many more. We work with more than 6 nations (from Spain, Belgium to Italy and Greece) on several large European funded projects and with large clients in Switzerland. We collaborate with universities and industry partners. Our goal is to advance the state of the art in several machine learning areas and to make it available to people, thus making it impactful. We publish regularly in peer-reviewed journals and we present at international conferences.

Responsibilities

  • Discuss with the team at the University of Palermo relevant research questions

  • Analize available sensor data

  • Develop algorithms for extracting information from the sensor data already available

  • Plan future data collection campaigns

  • Collect new data from the designed campaign

  • Analyze the data newly collected

Preferred Qualifications

  • Must have a valid work permit for Switzerland

  • Must be able to work independently on complex projects.

Minimum Qualifications

The candidate has obtained or is in the process of obtaining at least Bachelor degree in a topic related to machine learning (physics, mathematics, computer science, data science, etc.). A Master degree in Physics, Computer Science or Mathematics is an advantage.

  • Solid knowledge in programming, especially Python.

  • Beginner knowledge in deep neural networks and in the use of deep learning libraries. Keras and TensorFlow are preferred. Some experience in implementing neural network architectures in known frameworks such as PyTorch, Keras, Tensorflow is preferred.

  • Must have a valid work permit for Switzerland

  • Must be able to work independently on complex projects.

How to apply

To apply please send your CV to jobs@toelt.ai.

If available, we kindly ask the candidate to include at least one example of projects the candidate has worked on in data science (in the form of a GitHub repository).

Job description

The project aims to develop a LWIR camera-based portable prototype with deep-learning computer-vision models to advance patient monitoring technology together with the Emmental Hospital. Long wave infrared (LWIR, or thermal) imaging has the potential to enable real-time monitoring of patients' body temperatures and other physiological parameters, aiding in the early detection of fever, inflammation, or infection. The intern will play a crucial role in data collection, processing, and implementing deep learning algorithms for domain adaptation from thermal to RGB imaging. The intern will also work on the development of the sensor, the 3D printing and placing strategies at the hospital.

The workload is flexible and can be defined during discussion for a contract. The project duration is from 1.6.2024 until 30.9.2024 (4 Months).

Responsibilities

  • Collect image of volunteers in a medical environment using thermal and RGB cameras

  • Process and prepare collected data for analysis.

  • Test deep learning models; test open source implementation to transform thermal data to RGB (optional).

  • Conduct facial and body position analysis using computer-vision techniques.

  • Collaborate with the project team to refine and optimize the prototype.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The candidate has obtained or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor degree in a topic related to machine learning (physics, mathematics, computer science, data science, etc.).

  • Beginner knowledge in computer vision

  • Beginner knowledge in deep neural networks
